Field notes

Separate the jobs of compost and casing · continued

Check moisture in the layer itself as well as conditions above it. A room can feel humid while the casing has dried. Conversely, a wet-looking surface can hide compaction or poor distribution. Learn to compare samples under a consistent method with a trained grower; do not turn one photograph or a hand-squeeze description into a universal acceptance test.
