Cobweb disease

Spreading surface growth can overrun casing and fruit bodies. The important clue is progression across the crop, not simply white colour.

Organism / cause: Cladobotryum species, including C. mycophilum and C. dendroides

Where this evidence applies: Strong Agaricus evidence; additional cultivated hosts are documented in Korean studies. Susceptibility varies with isolate and host.

How it may arise or move

Disturbance, air movement, watering and contaminated handling can disperse spores from established patches.

Collect evidence before changing the crop

  1. Record patch boundaries and changes without brushing the growth.
  2. Check whether a shared watering or harvesting route precedes new patches.

What confirmation needs: Microscopy and, where needed, molecular identification distinguish Cladobotryum from other surface fungi.

What to do next

  1. Do not blow, brush or pressure-spray a suspected patch.
  2. Arrange careful containment before routine work; do not shut off life-support ventilation indiscriminately.

These are investigation and containment steps, not a guaranteed cure. Do not eat, sell or distribute suspect material on the strength of a visual match. Do not culture unknown contaminants or experiment with pesticides in a growing room.

Reduce recurrence

  • Inspect before watering and picking.
  • Control debris, clean shared tools and plan clean-to-dirty room access.

After intervention, compare new affected units, crop condition and inspection results against the same recorded baseline. A lack of visible growth does not, by itself, verify decontamination or food safety.
