Collect, chop, wet and treat. For oyster and milky the straw is soaked and then heated: 60 to 65 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes in DMR's oyster folder, or 65 to 70 degrees for one hour in the manual. It is drained to about 65 to 70 percent moisture.
For button, straw is composted: 28 to 30 days by the long method or 10 to 12 days indoors, then given a Phase II heat treatment at 58 to 59 degrees. For paddy straw, bundles are soaked 12 to 18 hours.
