Look closely
One reading is not the whole room
An instrument gives a reading at a particular place and time. The three bed markers in the picture are different locations from the instrument standing in room air. A reading from air should not be recorded as if it came from the growing material.
Use a consistent location code: room, rack, tier and position. Record time, crop stage, instrument and recent changes such as watering or a door opening. Compare locations at reasonably comparable times, using a method suitable for the quantity being measured.
If one location behaves differently, repeat the observation and check the instrument before changing the whole room. Investigate airflow, loading and material history with the responsible operator. The picture does not specify the number, depth or placement of sensors needed on your farm.
A batch code connects material to its history. The matching tags in the picture represent that link; the colour alone is not a record. Write an actual identifier and keep the underlying dates, supplier details and operations.
Record which spawn lot went into which substrate batch, where the bags or beds were placed, when they were handled, and which harvest and dispatch lots came from them. If several crop batches enter one dispatch, record each contributing batch.
Worked example: two substrate lots share a room, but slow development occurs mainly in one lot. Keeping their identities allows you to compare preparation, inoculation and transport history. Mixing the records removes that opportunity. This example does not establish what caused the problem.
The three lots show why one harvest can have different outcomes. Intact compact clusters, broad fragile clusters and broken pieces may not meet the same buyer specification. Agree the crop, maturity, pack and quality requirements before the harvesting shift.
Keep weights separate for each accepted grade, rejects, unsold stock and returns. Do not quietly place every kilogram into the highest-price category. Handle gently and follow the applicable hygiene and temperature-control procedure; the illustration is not a safety assessment of any product.
For an invented record, suppose 20 kg is picked, 16 kg meets the agreed grade, 2 kg is damaged and 2 kg remains unsold. The production sheet shows 20 kg; the accepted-sale sheet does not. Costs were incurred for the full crop, including the portion not sold.
Before the final harvest, decide who removes the crop, which route they use, where used material waits and how equipment is released for the next fill. Do not let the new crop’s arrival date become the only reason to declare the room ready.
Separate removal, cleaning, any method-specific sanitation, drying, maintenance and inspection into recorded tasks. A room can look empty while drains, tools, rack joints or damaged surfaces still need attention. Qualified advice is required for chemical use and heated or pressurised sanitation systems.
Spent mushroom material is not automatically suitable for every reuse. Its properties and prior inputs matter. Avoid uncontrolled dumping, runoff and pest harbourage; verify locally acceptable storage, transport and reuse or disposal arrangements.
Start with the intended crop, purchased material stage, room loading and operating calendar. These define work the building and equipment must support. A fan, cooler or rack quotation by itself does not show that the combined system can meet that brief.
Ask the responsible designer to state the design conditions, duty, utility needs, maintenance access, control intent, alarm response and acceptance tests. Compare quotations against the same scope, including what is excluded.
Plan staged checks: installation and safe operation by qualified people, instrument verification, documented room tests, then assessment under an appropriate operating load. Keep unresolved items visible. Do not use a conceptual room picture as a construction drawing or a sizing calculation.
Record the supplied material stage, quantity and distribution. Working access and air paths are part of the loading plan. Two rooms with the same floor area may contain very different growing loads.

Every load DMR publishes is per square metre of bed. In the first two flushes a bed makes about 10 g of carbon dioxide per square metre every hour, about 10 W of heat per square metre, and loses about 31 g of water per square metre every hour at 17 C and 85 per cent humidity.
So if you add a tier and increase bed area, you increase cooling, ventilation and humidification duty in the same proportion. The machine does not know you added shelves.

Fill evenly or grow two crops in one room
Uneven filling is a common cause of staggered flushes. Compost depth, compaction and casing thickness must be the same from the first tray to the last.
Casing thickness is worth agreeing in writing, because DMR's manual defines casing as a 3 to 4 cm layer in one paragraph and instructs a 4 to 5 cm application a few lines later. Pick one figure for your farm and hold it.

A bed that is deeper at one end runs warmer there, pins later and is picked later, so one room then needs two climate decisions at once.

Leave the air its path
Air must reach the back of the room and return. DMR limits air speed over the bed to 15 cm per second and asks for about 6 air changes per hour from venting to the end of the second flush, dropping to 4 later, with fresh air filtered to 2 micrometres.
That only happens if ducts, returns and doors stay clear. Rows pushed against a return, sheets hanging over a duct, or crates stacked in the corridor all change the map of the room.

Case study: the last two rows
A unit growing in a 60 by 18 foot room, the size MIDH costs in its production unit norm, added two rows against the back wall to use spare compost.
Those rows sat past the end of the duct run. They read 2 C warmer, pinned two days late, and after a normal watering the caps there stayed wet longest, which is the blotch condition.

A calendar tells you when to look at the crop. The crop tells you when to move it to the next stage.

The evidence is in the compost, not the diary. Spawn run is complete when the dark brown compost mass has turned light brown and white mycelium runs through the block.
DMR gives 12 to 14 days under controlled conditions, and the Hindi farmer folder gives 12 to 15 days for seasonal cultivation with long method compost. Those are windows for looking, not instructions to case.

Casing a block that is not fully run buries live but unspread mycelium, and the crop comes late and uneven. Check several trays across the room, including the coolest end, before you decide.

Casing to venting
Case run is held at 23 to 25 C air with about 95 per cent humidity, and DMR notes that no fresh air is given, so carbon dioxide reaches around 7500 ppm. Case run is about 7 days.
The evidence to vent is mycelium visible at the casing surface across the room, not the seventh day on a calendar.

Check casing moisture at the same time, because the casing carries the crop through pinning at 48 to 52 per cent. A dry casing at venting will pin thinly however good the air settings are.

Venting to cropping
At venting you choose a schedule and commit to it. Air comes down towards the fruiting band, carbon dioxide to 800 to 1000 ppm, and humidity from about 98 down to 92 per cent.
DMR expects pinheads 3 to 4 days after venting. If nothing shows by day five, the answer is in your own record: was the mycelium really at the surface, did carbon dioxide actually fall, was the casing dry.

Changing three settings at once at that moment destroys the evidence. Change one thing, wait the published time, and write down what happened.

Write the defence before you act
An operator should be able to defend every transition a week later. A short note does it.
Write the date and time, what was measured and where in the room, what the crop looked like in at least three places, which schedule you chose, what you expect within 72 hours, and what observation would prove you wrong.

That last line is the valuable one. If you expect pins in four days and none appear, the note tells you exactly which assumption failed, instead of leaving the whole crop open to guesswork.

A room is never one climate
Three published facts guarantee variation. The bed runs 1 to 2 C above the air around it. Air leaves the handling unit at 14 C to deliver 17 C at the bed, so it warms along its path. Air speed at the bed is limited to 15 cm per second, so the far end gets whatever is left.
Add a door that opens on to a warm corridor, tiers at different heights, and beds of different depth, and one room easily holds two climates.

Make a nine point map
Take three positions along the room, near the unit, middle and far end, at three heights, bottom, middle and top tier. That is nine points.
At each point record air temperature, bed temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide if you have a meter, and whether you can feel air movement. Use the same instrument, the same person and the same time of day, because the comparison matters more than absolute accuracy.

What the map tells you
A spread of more than a degree or two between points, a corner sitting outside the 80 to 85 per cent humidity band, or carbon dioxide well above the 1000 to 1500 ppm cropping band at the far end all say the same thing: the room is not distributing what the machine is making.
That is a baffle, duct, deflector or loading problem. Changing the set point to fix it only moves the whole room, and usually makes the good end wrong as well.

Map at least three times in a crop: at venting, during the first flush and during the third flush, when air changes drop from 6 to 4 per hour.
Keep the same nine points every time. A map that moves cannot be compared.

Then put the crop beside the climate. Record picked weight by position, not just by room. If the far end gives less weight at every mapping, you have evidence that survives an argument, and a target for the next shutdown. When a room goes wrong the useful question is rarely which cure. It is which measurement next, and what to contain while you find out.

Under uncertainty the cheapest safe action is nearly always another measurement. Where exactly is the problem, where is it not, which flush is running, and what changed about three days before it appeared.
Most corrective actions on a mushroom farm are reversible only in one direction. You can always take another reading. You cannot unspray a room or un-water a bed.

So the operator's first move is to close the information gap: readings at the affected position and at a clean position in the same room, taken with the same instrument, in the same hour.

Contain before you diagnose
Containment does not need a diagnosis and can be done today. Pick the clean rooms first and the suspect room last, then stop moving people, tools and crates back.
Cover an affected patch rather than brushing it, because brushing throws spores into the air. Bag waste at the bed instead of carrying it open through the corridor.

These steps cost nothing and are never wrong. If the problem turns out to be watering rather than disease, you have lost one morning of convenience. If it is disease, you may have saved the rest of the crop.

Speed decides the order
Some problems set the clock. DMR states that dry bubble, left uncontrolled, can destroy a crop in 2 to 3 weeks, so it outranks a slow quality complaint.
Bacterial blotch needs 20 C with a water film on the cap for more than about three hours, which is something you can end this afternoon with air movement and watering discipline. False truffle appears above 23 C.

For flies, DMR's thresholds decide: any live adult in the first flush, or more than 20 catches per trap per week from the second flush onwards, is an action point.

Where your decision stops
Two boundaries are not the operator's to move. The first is chemical: this course prints no product names or doses, approvals change, and mushrooms are eaten fresh. Check the current label approval for mushrooms in India and your state advisory, and remember NHB's minimum 48 hour gap between spray and picking.
The second is the end of the crop. NHB records a cook out at 70 C held for 12 hours for pathogens, and 2 to 3 hours for insects, with spent compost buried under at least 10 cm of manure.
